JICTA Course - Session 4

This is a report on the Junior ICT Assistants course held yesterday evening - 7th December 2005 - at Forest Gate Youth Centre.

Members Attending: Hanif, Isti, Pratik, Usman, Jamal, Bernadette, Elyas, Fola, Flamur

Staff: Gavin, Sulthana

The original plan for this session was for course members to continue working on Photoshop but the tutor David was unable to attend so we looked at what people had done:

To make sure:

1. Everyone has signed up to the NYPO forum and left messages

2. Everyone has completed the new NYPO membership/profile form

3. Everyone is able to use the gallery

4. Everyone is able to use the file upload facility

5. That everyone had a blog

I also suggested that it would a good idea for people to do a poem using the 'Magic Box' model

One member of the group was asked to leave and review his commitment to the course.

Ground Rules for Junior ICT Assistants Sessions.

The following ground rules were suggested and agreed by the Junior ICT Assistants group on Wednesday 7th December. The group was split into three smaller groups and the rules were collated from the suggestions that emerged. Some repetition is left in because it emphasises the point. I have added my comments and comments from the discussion.

1. Teamwork - It is important to recognise that as a team we need to support each other.

2. No use of MSN, Habbo Hotel ect. during sessions - This takes people's focus away from the group.

3. Listen to each other - This is vital because it shows respect and encourages people to speak confidently, it also means that work can progress more quickly.

4. No Swearing - Again this is about respect for each other.

5. No isolating yourself - Feel that you are part of the group offer help to others and ask for help when you need it.

6. Respect one another - Feeling respected increases everyone's confidence to do good work.

7. Focus on work - We can't learn without focussing

8. No Games - If we work together what we are doing should be more interesting than most games.

9. No Music - This distracts others

10. No offensive remarks - Again, we need to help make others feel comfortable

11. Actually Listen - This is really important so worth repeating.

12. Respect the Computers

13. No fighting

14. Don't run around

15. Turn off phones (unless they need to be on for calls from parents).

16. Don't eat or drink.

To these rules I would add:

17. Be positive about the group - Don't make negative remarks about what we are doing. If you think something is not worth doing or is not going well ask for a discussion on this so it can be changed or better explained. Negative side comments just drain energy from a group.

Finally

Jamal has offered to be moderator on the New Members Board and take responsibility for helping new users. He will be co-moderator on the Tech Board.

Next wednesday is the last session of the course before Christmas.
