It was a very good turnout. Seventeen young people and three staff turned up for this first meeting of the Newham Young People Online Cyberworkshop. All of the members, except Jamal who was already part of NYPO, had been involved in the Summer School Programme during July and August. They had been invited by Gavin to be part of a group that would meet regularly to work on computer maintenance and upgrading projects and on website development Projects.

Gavin explained that he envisaged people working on joint and on individual projects. He asked people to say:

  • What Interests they have,
  • What Skills.
  • What Personal Goals and
  • What Goals for the group.

Gavin outlined his own goals and said that his goal for the group was that they should become a team that work and that has a role in developing the NYPO project through taking on collective ICT projects. Gavin admitted that sometimes he was not good at maintaining communication and said that one of his personal goals was to improve this.

Zavier (13) said that his interests include Sports, engineering, games and acting. His skills include rap, dance, gaming and acting, dance, singing and maintenance jobs on go-karts. As personal goals he included building and networking computers, web design and making his own game. He mentioned 'group networking' as goal for the group. It wasn't clear whether he meant computer networking as a group or networking in it's social sense.

Sulaiman said that he had skills in computer maintenance and web design and that he wanted "to gain more skills in order to help the community."

Olu said that he was interested in Basketball.

Nishant (15) said that he was interested in games, cricket, go-karting, sci-fi, sports and flying. He has skills in animation, gaming, racing and ICT generally. His interests include, updating his blog, going on trips, playing computer games, surfing the net, using online forums such as http://www.techguy.org/, building and networking computers. His goals are to learn more HTML, CSS and Flash, to create more websites and to build his own computer. Giovanni wants the group to build and refurbish computers, go out on trips, create forums, have gaming sessions, be a good working group and have fun.

Gee (13) lists his interests as games, maths, relationships, Internet and comedy. His skills include running and the high jump, archery, table tennis and badninton. Rizwan suggested that a forum could be set up for people to discuss homework and coursework that they might be doing. The forum could either be part of the regular NYPO forum or it could separate. Gavin said that he would set something up by next week.

The meeting finished with Gavin talking about the plan for the next session on the following Saturday. Gavin wanted to do two things: First to look at the theory behind building computers and second to come up with an outline of the continuing programme for the group. Spike would lead on the part about building computers and focus on 'planning to build a modern computer'. Gavin will draft a programme 0f activities for the next few months that the group can discuss.

The next session of the NYPO Cyberworkshop is on Saturday 23rd at 1.30 pm
