Events, Activities and Opportunities

This is an update on what's been happening and what's going to happen in the NYPO community:

ADAM REGIS APPEAL AND DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS AGM - 17 March

Thanks and congratulations to Amin and Awais for their great presentation at the Educating da Endz help as part of the Adam Regis Appeal at West Ham Hotel on Monday 17th March. There is a discussion of this on the NYPO Forum so I don't need to say anything more about that.

Thanks and congratulations also to Jamal and Veronia who did a presentation about NYPO at the DoE Awards AGM held at Stratford Town Hall on the same evening.

WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT CONSULTATION - 27 March 6.00pm at Little Ilford Centre

Following discussions with young people and a website design course on 18 - 22 February it became clear that the NYPO website needed to be refreshed. I've starting doing this but it is not a job for one person and really needs a development and management team to make the necessary improvements and sustain them.

There will be a consultation evening with the young people and invited youth work staff about the development of the NYPO website on 27th March at 6.00pm at Little Ilford Centre. The agenda for the evening is as follows:

1. Warm-up exercise

2. Review of the discussions about the development of the NYPO website

3. Looking at the current website structure and design

4. Getting feedback from young people and youthworkers about making this site and the online facilities more useful across the service. Including looking at the development of sections or subdomains for centres and projects.

5. Outlining the tasks and development process of the Website Development and Management Project group

6. Discussing the benefits of the website for youth work in Newham and ensuring commitment from youth work staff.

Anyone interested in being part of the development team should attend the meeting. I know a lot of you have interests and skills in this area and I would be keen to see some of the new members I met on the Website Design course.

CYBER WORKSHOP - REGISTRATION DAY Saturday 12 April at Little Ilford Centre

I want to extend the hours of the Saturday cyber workshop to run from 11.00am to 4.00pm. The plan is for the cyber workshop to comprise of four or five elements:

11.00 - 1.00 Computer Maintenance Basics (Spike)
11.00 - 1.00 Website Development and Management Project (Gavin and Sulthana)

1.30 - 3.30 Pimp My Computer Project (Spike)
1.30 - 3.30 Digital Graphics and Website Design (Sulthana)
1.30 - 3.30 Games Workshop (Gavin)

Running this programme depends on the take-up by young people so I would like a 'registration day' on 12 April (11.00am to 4.00pm) when we find out what interest/commitment there is from young people.

The programme proper will start on 26 April using whatever times are appropriate. On 19 April we will have a Duke of Edinburgh Award introduction and expedition training day (11.00am to 4.00pm) for anyone interested in the award or anyone who just wants to be part of the group activities.

PERSONAL BEST IN DIGITAL GRAPHICS 7 - 11 April at Little Ilford Centre Every day 10.00am - 3.00pm

This is an course in digital design using PhotoShop led by Charmaine Charles. Young people will learn about good design and learn the techniques to produce it; they will also be given the opportunity to take on a personal design/learning project that lead to an award and participation in a showcase in September.

Please note that the above info will be put onto the NYPO forum so you can ask questions and find out more about all the activities.
