Let teens drink… in moderation

By Baavitran Christy On 26 August 2010ADD COMMENTS

teendrinkBinge drinking. There are dozens of viewpoints on this sensitive subject. It can provoke drunken violence and cause ill health that wastes both the time and money of the National Health Service.

In England, thousands of teenagers drink alcohol to relieve themselves of the stresses that they feel during their life.

Surely there must be ways of reducing this from happening? Perhaps social workers can help. Perhaps new laws can help. Perhaps increasing the price of alcohol can help.

In France, these problems are kept to a minimum – their solution is simple. Read the rest of this entry »

Friends are good!

friends

A topic that nearly everyone can and probably will relate to, friends. No matter what age or gender friends are something we need; life really would just be dull without them.

We need peers for support, comfort and play; also to become a social person your first real people skills usually start with the day you make your first friend. Although many seem to come and go, we devote a lot of our time making those relationships last and stay strong. But the question, is do they hold the key to our actions?

A study shows that as society is developing the time we spend with our friends is also increasing. It shows that in the European-American culture teens spend over half of their time with friends. Obviously then our peers have very high influence on our lives.

The amount of teenagers the drink and smoke in London- where would they have picked up these bad Read the rest of this entry »

The Uniform Protest

By Baavitran Christy On 24 July 20106 COMMENTS

they all look the same

Langdon School are proposing a new uniform, consisting of new blazers, clip-on ties, bags and woolly hats. This has been proposed by the new headteacher, Ms. Tabassum, who’s refusing to take on board the views of the Langdon pupils.

“I think the idea is a waste of time, and money,” says  Naveen Prithivraj, a Langdon pupil. “ I see no problems with the current uniform. The majority of the people from our school agree with me, as I have done a petition yet despite this, Langdon School continues to dictate their new rules with the school uniform.”

There are many reasons against the new uniform. Firstly, the cost of this new uniform will be very dear. Most likely going over £100, which I doubt any parent would want to spend their money on, particularly as they have already bought a uniform when their children began school. Secondly, wearing ‘Langdon’ branded bags and uniforms will lead to violence and hate crime between different schools as Read the rest of this entry »

Inspirational Interviews: Gavin Sealey

By Kiran Patel On 17 July 20101 COMMENT

Gavin Sealey

Gavin Sealey

Inspirational Interviews is a series of interviews throughout the year with interesting figures in life that provide something to our local community or world. They are aimed at inspiring everyone with different thoughts, ideas and concepts.

It gives me a great pleasure to publish an interview with Gavin Sealey, the founder of Newham Young People Online and until recently a senior youth worker in the Newham Youth Service relating to all things technology plus learning.

The introduction is over now let’s get down to the interview…

Kiran: When you were young would did you want to be when you grew up?

Gavin: I read a lot of comics and also fantasy and science fiction so I wanted to be a superhero or space explorer. Then I wanted to be a wise man living on a mountain. More realistically I thought I could be a university lecturer but I did not study hard enough and instead became a school teacher.

Kiran: How did you get involved with Youth Work? Read the rest of this entry »

Nutter, Nutcase, Mad, Weirdo…?

By Kiran Patel On 25 May 20103 COMMENTS

mental healthI’m writing this article for two reasons; one of them is to spread the word and the other is to show support for a campaign to invest in comprehensive mental health services for young people by British Youth Council.

The British Youth Council has launched a Manifesto created by young people for young people. It outlines five actions that Parliament must take to improve the lives of young people in the UK. Mental Health is one of them.

I’ve known people that really needed help but found that help is only aimed at adults. Further, it is a taboo subject amongst young people who don’t understand what mental health is. This is wrong I believe. By 2020, the World Health Organisation predicts depression will be the second biggest global health concern after heart disease. Read the rest of this entry »
